Engineering faculty member shares research on virtual reality for job training

Beiwen Li, associate professor in the College of Engineering, spoke with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution about VR Co-Lab, a virtual reality simulation to train recycling workers how to collaborate with robots for electronics disassembly.

The simulation is intended to help workers learn to become comfortable working with robots and be able to avoid injury.

“Humans can’t get hurt in a virtual environment,” Li said.

Training employees to get comfortable with robots can be time consuming and difficult. Feedback from the program is intended to help streamline this process.

“The VR environment is providing a more immersive experience,” Li said. “It is typically much better than just having the workers just read the manuals.”
