Michael Mengak, professor in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, spoke with Southern Living about how to identify what kind of animal is digging holes or tunnels in yards.
Properly identifying the responsible critter is key to practicing the right management techniques.
“It’s really a process of an elimination,” Mengak said. “You may have 20 possible culprits that can be narrowed down to the two or three of the most likely suspects.”
Mengak gave several pointers for how to approach the process and highlighted some common culprits. But he reminded readers, it might not be the kind of pest you first guess.
“It could just be your neighbor’s dog,” Mengak said. “You can’t overlook the obvious.”
