Athens, Ga. – The class of 2014 at the University of Georgia will include eightstudents who have been awarded the Bernard Ramsey Honors Scholarship, one of the university’s premier academic awards.
The UGA Foundation trustees established the scholarship in 2000 to recognize the university’s most generous individual benefactor, Bernard Ramsey, a 1937 graduate of UGA’s Terry College of Business.Ramsey served as chairman of the board of Merrill Lynch for a number of years.
Ramsey Honors Scholars enroll in UGA’s academically rigorous Honors Program and can participate in a variety of academic and cultural opportunities offered by Honors.Study-abroad and peer and faculty mentoring programs are among the academic enrichment experiences. They also receive individual attention and support from a senior faculty mentor and a current Ramsey Scholar.
“We are very impressed by this group of new Ramsey Scholars,” said David S. Williams, director of UGA’s Honors Program. “They have not only very strong academic credentials, but also a diverse array of talents. It will be a pleasure to work with them.”
In-state students receive an annual stipend of $4,500 and the HOPE Scholarship. Out-of-state students receive an annual stipend of $7,200 and out-of-state tuition waivers. Second- and third-year students in the program also are eligible for a $3,000 travel-study grant for additional educational opportunities.
The 2010 recipients have an average SAT score of 1551. Their average high school grade point average is 4.23 on a 4.0 scale, which indicates extra points for Advanced Placement classes. They also have strong academic and extracurricular achievements.
The Ramsey Scholars may renew the scholarship for an additional three years as long as they maintain cumulative 3.5 grade point averages and are in good standing with the Honors Program.
