Elizabeth Weeks, who has served as the University of Georgia’s interim vice provost for academic affairs since June 2025, has been named to the position on a permanent basis. Her appointment is effective immediately.
“Throughout her distinguished career at UGA, Professor Weeks has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to academic excellence,” said Benjamin C. Ayers, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost. “Her ability to navigate complex institutional priorities — from the humanities to the frontier of artificial intelligence — makes her the ideal person to help steer the university’s academic mission. I look forward to her continued partnership in this critical role.”
As vice provost for academic affairs, Weeks will provide strategic leadership for the university’s academic programs and initiatives, policy development, governance processes and faculty matters. She will chair the UGA Arts Council and the university’s Leadership Council on Artificial Intelligence while serving as co-chair of the UGA Humanities Council.
“I am thrilled to serve the University of Georgia in this vital role and appreciate Provost Ayers for entrusting me to do so,” Weeks said. “My family and I have benefited throughout my life from the incredible resources and opportunities that our university offers. It is a true privilege to give back and be part of such an outstanding, dedicated leadership team.”
Weeks has served as associate provost for faculty affairs since 2020. In this role, she directs UGA’s Office of Faculty Affairs and works closely with campus leaders on faculty-related policies, processes and records while also overseeing a robust slate of professional development programming for faculty.
The Charles H. Kirbo Chair in the UGA School of Law, Weeks joined the UGA faculty in 2011. Her research focuses on health care financing and regulation, health care reform and public health law. She is the author or co-author of two books, with a third solo-authored book scheduled for publication in 2027. She has written nearly 50 book chapters and articles in law reviews, journals and other publications.
Prior to her tenure at UGA, Weeks was a professor at the University of Kansas School of Law where she also served as director of the Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic.
Her honors include election to the American Law Institute; the Health Law Scholars Award from the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics; and the Howard M. and Susan Immel Award for Teaching Excellence from the University of Kansas School of Law.
An Athens native, Weeks earned her bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and her law degree summa cum laude from UGA.
Weeks will soon launch a search for a new associate provost for faculty affairs.
