Regarded as one of Switzerland’s leading vocal ensembles, Ensemble Corund was founded in 1993 by American conductor Stephen Smith. Specializing in the sacred vocal music of the Renaissance, baroque and 20th century, the ensemble has been featured on American, German and Swiss radio and is a frequent guest at music festivals on both sides of the Atlantic. The group has regularly toured the U.S. and last appeared in Athens in 2003, performing Bach’s Mass in B minor. Ensemble Corund’s instrumental partners, Corund Baroque Orchester and Corund Baroque Ensemble, have been critically acclaimed in their own right.
Smith was born and raised in the Southeast and studied organ and conducting at Furman University before moving to Switzerland to complete his studies. Based in the canton of Lucerne since 1982, he is in demand as a conductor, organist and teacher and is the organist and cantor at the Matthäuskirche in Lucerne.
A pre-concert lecture will be given at 7:15 p.m. by Heidi Lucas, a music student at UGA. The lecture is open to the public.
