Athens, Ga. – J. Michael Floyd has been promoted to the position of executive director of food services at the University of Georgia, where he has led the multiple-award-winning food services program for 22 years.
Floyd has been director of food services since 2006; prior to that, he had the title of head of the food services department for 20 years.
Under his leadership, the food services program has won 67 national awards for excellence and is rated in the top one percent of collegiate food programs based on customer satisfaction and national awards.
Food services, which daily serves 30,000 meals in 17 campus dining halls, food courts and other sites, is an auxiliary unit in UGA=s division of finance and administration.
“Mike is a nationally recognized leader in food service operations and UGA’s food service program is one of the best in the country,” said George Stafford, associate vice president for finance and administration. “This promotion is overdue recognition of Mike for his outstanding leadership and dedicated service to the university and our students, faculty and staff.”
Stafford said that in addition to continuing to manage food services, Floyd will assume additional responsibility for financial oversight of the Bulldog Card program, and will provide marketing guidance for other auxiliary units in the finance and administration division.
Floyd, who is also an adjunct instructor of foods and nutrition in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, joined UGA in 1986 from Valdosta State College, where he was food services director for seven years.
Since he became director, UGA has received 60 Loyal E. Horton Awards from the American Association of College and University Food Services-more than any other collegiate food service. Other high honors include the Ivy Award of Distinction from Restaurants and Institutions Magazine, considered the industry’s highest award, and the 2002 Silver Plate Award from the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association.
This year, food services received the Governor’s Commendation for Excellence in Customer Service award from Gov. Sonny Perdue for implementing 24-hour service in dining halls. In 2007, food services received honorable mention in competition for the Chancellor’s Outstanding Customer Service Leadership Award.
