Athens, Ga. – The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia will host its annual Black History Month celebration Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. This dinner, titled “Patterns of Culture,” honors African-American leaders who have bettered their communities through arts and culture. This year’s honorees are Georgia artist Charles Pinckney and preservationist Jeanne Cryiaque.

“Patterns of Culture” will begin with a gallery talk led by William U. Eiland, museum director, and Carissa DiCindio, curator of education. The talk will focus on works by African-American artists in the collection, including Jacob Lawrence’s painting “Children at Play” (1947).

A seated dinner and ceremony featuring a drum performance by Arvin Scott, a faculty member in UGA’s Hodgson School of Music, will follow.

The event is “a celebration and recognition of African-American artists and their contributions as American artists throughout history,” said Everett Long, a doctoral candidate at the UGA School of Public Health and the “Patterns of Culture” event coordinator. “The event especially seeks to recognize local and regional African-American artists who continue to put Athens and Georgia on the map in the current art world.”

Tickets are $55, $45 for members of the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art or $20 for students, $15 for student members. RSVP to 706-542-0830 by Feb. 14.
