Athens, Ga. – The Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia is presenting an exhibition of recent acquisitions until Oct. 2. The exhibition brings together highlights from the museum’s permanent collection that has been acquired over the past four years through donations.
“Recent Acquisitions” examines a wide range of work, dating from the 17th to the 21st century. The 28 works in the gallery, each on view for the first time, reflect the museum’s commitment to diversity in manner, era and medium. Although mostly consisting of works on paper, the exhibition also incorporates other artistic mediums from canvas to three-dimensional wood sculpture and decorative arts.
Highlights include “John I” (1990), a direct gravure on paper by American contemporary artist Chuck Close; “Ossie” (ca. 1990), a sculpture by folk artist O.L. Samuels; and a recently acquired neoclassical armchair from the late 18th century. Also on view is an oil on board by Pierre Daura, the newest addition to the museum’s Pierre Daura Center.
“Recent Acquisitions” was organized by Laura Valeri, associate curator of European art. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
