Gordhan Patel, retired research VP, will be honored at ice cream social

The UGA and Athens communities are invited to attend an ice cream social to honor Gordhan L. Patel (below), who retired Aug. 1 from his position as UGA’s vice president for research and associate provost.

The event, sponsored by the UGA Office of the Vice President for Research, will take place Sept. 21 from 3-5 p.m. on the lawn of the D.W. Brooks Mall near the pharmacy building. Program remarks will begin at 4 p.m. In case of rain, the event will take place at the Tate Student Center Reception Hall on the lower level.

After serving as the interim vice president for research from October 2000 until August 2001, Patel was named the vice president and simultaneously served as the executive vice president for the University of Georgia Research Foundation Inc. He began his tenure with the university in 1967 as an assistant professor of zoology and studied proteins involved in the unwinding of the DNA double helix. From 1981 until 1989 he served as head of the zoology department (now the cellular biology department) and was then named dean of the Graduate School, a position he held until becoming the vice president.
