On May 30, the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library will host its first ever Virtual Family Day event.
The event celebrates the exhibit “The Strategies of Suffrage: Mobilizing a Nation for Women’s Rights,” which explores the women’s suffrage movement from 1848 to 1920, focusing on the visual and verbal appeals activists used to promote their message to the public.
The family day website features virtual tour stops, suffragette storytime, and craft activity instructions designed for all ages. A limited number of free Family Day art kits are available for pick-up at Treehouse Kid & Craft in Athens, Georgia beginning May 18. Curbside pickup is available from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Participants can register for a kit through the Treehouse website. The free craft kits were made possible with support from the Lucy Hargrett Draper Center and Archives for the Study of the Rights of Women.
“Even though our galleries are currently closed, we hope these resources will help our K-12 audience connect with this important history, as we celebrate 100 years since women gained the vote in the United States” said Jan Hebbard, exhibition coordinator. “Working remotely with my colleagues to put this event together has been a lot of fun for our staff.”
The outreach team for UGA Libraries’ special collections units is working on other ways to connect visitors to exhibits virtually. On Thursday, May 28, Hebbard will host a free virtual tour of the suffrage exhibit in collaboration with the Atlanta Preservation Center. On Saturday, June 20, the Russell Library will co-host a Virtual Family Day with the Georgia Museum of Art to explore the art of Art Rosenbaum, who designed a mural at the Special Collections Building and other places in Athens.
In addition, UGA undergraduate students in the Special Collections Student Docent Program are busy creating video tour stops that offer a closer look at items on display in the exhibit galleries. Once finished, the videos will be added to the libraries’ Kaltura page.
