The department of housing will welcome new and returning students to UGA Aug. 9-10 during Hunker Down with Housing, a volunteer program designed to streamline the move-in process for students and their families.
Approximately 200 UGA student, faculty and staff volunteers will be located across campus to greet the approximately 8,000 new and returning students and parents, give directions to area parking lots, direct traffic and generally serve as a resource for residents and their families. Since the first Hunker Down with Housing in 1998, volunteers have successfully moved in more than 70,000 students.
University Housing is working with UGA Parking Services, UGA Police and other campus departments as well as the Athens-Clarke County government, the week preceding the start of classes to ensure that the initial days of move-in run smoothly.
On-street parking will not be available to the university on Finley Street (from Baxter Street to Cloverhurst Avenue) and Church Street (from Baxter Street to Talmadge Drive) from noon Aug. 8 until 5 p.m. on Aug. 15.
The Tate Student Center parking deck and lot will be used as a staging area for residents of Brumby Hall. Vehicles other than those affiliated with residential move-in, or service and emergency vehicles, parked in the Tate Center deck and lot will not be allowed to exit from 6 a.m.-1 p.m. on Aug. 9.
Student Technology Support (www.uga.edu/sts), a unit of UGA’s Enterprise Information Technology Services, will be present at various locations within the residence halls to assist students in connecting their computers to the campus network.
In addition, UGA’s recycling program will have receptacles available for students wishing to recycle packing boxes and other materials associated with move-in.
On Aug. 9, traffic is expected to be very heavy on Baxter, Lumpkin, Finley, Hull and Church streets. Members of the UGA and Athens communities are advised to avoid these areas and be aware that traffic around the university will be congested through the weekend of Aug. 13.
