Inaugural system-wide summit on diversity, inclusion to be held at UGA

Leaders from the 35 University System of Georgia institutions will meet in Athens this month to discuss “Valuing Diversity and Committing to Inclusion in Dialogue and Practice” at the inaugural USG Diversity Summit.

Organized by Cheryl Dozier, associate provost for institutional diversity at UGA, the summit focuses on diversity and its representation within senior administrative units of Georgia’s public colleges and universities.

“When we bring people from all of our institutions together to learn about diversity, we greatly compound the knowledge that we already have,” Dozier said. “Not only will we learn new strategies, we’ll also be able to see what’s working on other Georgia campuses.”

The conference runs Oct. 28-29 at the Georgia Center. It’s targeted to senior administrators, but is open to all interested participants. Registration is required and is $110 for USG participants.

The summit will be opened with remarks by UGA President Michael F. Adams and Chancellor Eroll B. Davis Jr. Sessions will focus on the role of leadership in achieving campus diversity and equity, cultivating a climate of inclusiveness, and institutionalizing diversity through models, structures and strategies.

Two leading scholars in higher education diversity, Walter Allen and Sylvia Hurtado, both of UCLA’s Higher Education Research Institute, will deliver the summit’s keynote addresses.
