Mongolian folk music has a charismatic, distinctive sound — joyously churning fiddles and deep, droning throat singing. The leading exponents of Inner Mongolian music worldwide, the nine members of the band Anda Union appear at Hodgson Concert Hall on April 3 at 7:30 p.m.
As Anda Union celebrates 20 years of music making, the band has become a cultural phenomenon in the East. Recent winners of the popular Chinese reality TV show The Big Band, they wowed audiences by singing in their native language, rocketing into the limelight and bringing their Mongolian sound to the masses. Anda Union has since starred in many commercial campaigns and headlined festivals and stadiums across China.
Anda Union all trained in traditional Mongolian music from a young age and are part of a revivalist movement finding inspiration in traditional music. Their haunting harmonies and vibrant strings evoke the endless beauty of the Mongolian grasslands. Combining throat singing and long song with horse head fiddles and two stringed lutes, they bring this powerful ancient music to life.
Anda Union brings a unique combination of styles from across the grasslands coalescing in a unique and magisterial sound while remaining true to their cultural roots. They have headlined many world music and mainstream festivals, winning over international fans with their powerful music.
Join audiences for a pre-performance talk in Ramsey Concert Hall from 6:45-7:15 p.m.
This performance is supported by Rhonda Lucile Hicks.
