The U.S. Department of Education’s student loan forgiveness program doesn’t start until October 2017, but hundreds of thousands of borrowers already are sending in paperwork to have their loans cleared, according to an article on Inside Higher Ed.
Under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, former students can have their debts expunged after 10 years of payments if they work in the government or in a nonprofit organization. The program was created in 2007 as part of the College Cost Reduction and Access Act.
