Jenna Jambeck, an assistant professor in the College of Engineering, received $60,000 from the Lanxess Corp. to study the optimization of green roof technology. Green roofs are roofs of homes and other buildings that are covered with vegetation, which provides insulation, absorbs rainwater, improves air quality, serves as a habitat for wildlife and lowers temperatures. The roofs also often serve as a peaceful place for people to gather for breaks and parties, particularly in bustling urban environments where greenery is sparse or nonexistent.
Jambeck will work with Lanxess to improve the technologies that promise to make green roofs a more viable option for buildings throughout the world.
