The National Collegiate Athletic Association has given preliminary approval to a plan to take scholarships away from Division I sports teams when their players flunk their courses.
Under the plan, each team will receive a score called an Academic Progress Rate, which will be calculated according to a complex formula.
If a percentage of the athletes on a given team either leave without passing enough of their classes or return to college without grades good enough to make them eligible for sports, that team will lose a scholarship for every athlete who flunks out.
