Following an appeal by Florida State University administrators, the National Collegiate Athletic Association exempted the university from its recent policy against “hostile or abusive” Native American nicknames and mascots.
Because the Florida Seminole Nation’s Tribal Council endorsed the school’s use of the nickname earlier this summer, NCAA officials removed the Seminoles from its list of 18 institutions with offensive names.
