New buildings and renovations

t classrooms, one 15-seat seminar room, seven small discussion rooms, two student lounges, two large open research labs, an executive conference room, a library and offices for faculty, staff, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The dedication ceremony will occur Sept. 10.

2 – The Tate Student Center expansion opened June 1. It includes a new pay-by-the-hour parking deck, meeting spaces and four new eateries: Taste of Home Café, Barberitos Southwestern Grill, Larry’s Giant Subs and Hotei’s Asian Grill.

3 – The Ramsey Student Center has completed renovations on the space previously used as a gymnastics practice facility. The new strength and conditioning room opened Aug. 10. cycling equipment has been moved to aerobics Room E. Also, the boxing studio has relocated from Racquetball Court 10 to the former cycling studio.

4 – Renovations at the Interim Medical Partnership Building, located at 279 Williams St., were completed over the summer. The building now has small-group classrooms, lecture halls, a medical library, student lounge, a gross anatomy lab and faculty office space. Campus Dean Dr. Barbara Schuster and her staff began moving into their new offices July 31, and the first students are expected to enroll in August 2010.

5 – The Redcoat Band Practice Field, (below) or Rec Sports Complex Field 9, has been renovated for the band to practice . The field has new sod and lights. When not in use by the band, the field is

available for intramural activities.

6 – The renovation and expansion to the University Health Center was recently completed. A new Vision Clinic, which faculty, staff and their dependents can use, opened Aug. 10. The health center is completely redesigned with a new entrance, new lobby, newly renovated pharmacy and a nutrition kitchen on the first floor. The Allergy and Travel Clinic moved from the second to the first floor. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held Sept. 1.

7 – An addition and renovation to the physics building was completed in late spring. The project added 10,000 square feet of new research labs and meeting space.

8 – Construction was recently completed on four fraternity houses in the new Greek Park on the newly designated Greek Park Circle off River Road.

9 – The Griffin Campus will dedicate its new student learning center Aug. 26.

Closings

10 – The Benson Building, formerly the home of the Institute for Women’s Studies, was demolished this summer. Women’s studies has moved to the basement of Gilbert Hall.

11 – The Spec Towns Track remains closed for renovations through November.

Parking changes

12 – The Intramural Deck (E21) is scheduled to open by the end of August.

13 – The Performing Arts Center deck (E20) is expected to open mid-November.

14 – The Ramsey Pay Lot (E03) has become a permit-only lot. However, Ramsey patrons may park in the lot from 5 p.m.-7 a.m., when the lot restrictions will not be enforced. At other times, Ramsey patrons should park in the East Deck.

15 – The East Deck (E04) has become a permit and pay facility. Ramsey permits will continue to be accepted in the East Deck for faculty/staff for the 90 minutes currently allowed. Deck enforcement hours will continue to be 7 a.m.-4 p.m. UGACard holders may park there for free from 4 p.m.-7 a.m., but will need to take a ticket when entering and show that ticket and UGACard when exiting on the second level. Ramsey users who work out from 6-7 a.m. should pull a ticket at the gate and exit from the second level of the deck. Also, even if the gate is up, Ramsey patrons should scan their hang tag when entering the deck to allow re-entry. The computer only recognizes scan in and scan out-not just a scan out.

16 – There will be more parking spaces in the Coliseum lot (S16) with the August parking lot addition in front of the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences.

17 – West campus lot W04 will be combined into lot W13 and will be available for parking only through December due to the construction of the Special Collections Library in spring 2010. Permit holders will be required to register for a lot change before their permits expire Dec 31.

18 – The Hull Street deck (W05) has been converted to a permit-only deck.

19 – The Painting and Design lots in W13 have been included in lot W01.

20 – The traffic flow in the West Deck (W09) has been re-engineered with all clockwise turns going up.

Projects under way

21 – Renovation of the journalism TV studio in the basement of the journalism building is expected to be complete in early October with move-in slated for Nov. 1.

22 – The Fine Arts Theatre renovation may be finished as early as December.

23 – The renovation of New College is slated to be finished in March.

24 – Construction has started for the Butts-Mehre expansion. It will feature a new suite of football offices, weight and meeting rooms and a 30-yard indoor football field. The project is scheduled for completion in summer 2010. A formal groundbreaking is scheduled for Sept. 11.

25 – A new 550-bed residence hall is going up on East Campus. The residence hall is expected to be finished in summer 2010.

26 – Due to an extensive expansion and renovation, galleries remain closed at the Georgia Museum of Art. The museum is scheduled to reopen in early 2011.

27 – Construction is scheduled to begin in December for the Special Collections Library. This timetable is contingent on the sale of state bonds. Work is under way on a new $2.5 million horticulture complex at the State Botanical Garden. Slated to be finished next summer, the complex will include outdoor growing areas, greenhouses, spaces for equipment repair and storage and staff offices. Bus changes Campus Transit will provide increased service to the Intramural Fields. The Orbit route will serve the new parking deck every five minutes, while East Campus Express will pass about every seven minutes. Early morning service to Athens’ Multi-Modal Center will no longer be provided by the Orbit route. Family Housing will now begin operation at 6 a.m., providing service to the center. New bus stops will be located on East Campus Road near Cedar Street to accommodate residents of the new Greek Park. The stops will be serviced by East Campus Express. River’s Crossing service has been extended to include the Poultry Disease Research Center on College Station Road. Service will be provided to the new Club Sports Complex every 30 minutes from the East Campus Deck from 3–11 p.m. Overnight bus service will continue this year, operating Monday through Thursday nights during the regular school year.
