Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia began selling permits for its new parking deck at the intramural fields on Monday, Aug. 31, and will open the deck to serve customers on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The 500-space deck also will be open on home football Saturdays to accommodate fans.
“The addition of this parking deck enables us to better serve our customers,” said Tim Burgess, senior vice president for finance and administration. “As the university builds new facilities to accommodate expanding academic programs and student services, surface parking lots are lost. By building decks on the perimeter of campus, we replace those spaces and create a more pedestrian-friendly, green campus on the interior, in keeping with our master plan for campus development.”
Commuters parking in the intramural deck will be served by enhanced Orbit and East Campus Express bus routes operated by Campus Transit, connecting them to all parts of campus. Parking spaces in the new deck will be offered at the lowest monthly rate of $20.
Construction of the deck was financed by the UGA Real Estate Foundation, Inc. and overseen by the Office of University Architects for Facilities Planning. The design and structural integrity of the intramural deck was affirmed in a comprehensive inspection by an independent structural engineer, KSi, earlier this summer.
The deck was constructed over the last 6 ½ months and completed at a cost of $8 million. This expense is covered by parking revenue; no state dollars were expended on the project.
The intramural deck brings to a total of nine the number of decks in the university’s parking inventory. A tenth deck, now under construction adjacent to the Performing Arts Center on East Campus, will be completed in late November.
