Students at Northern New Mexico College in Espanola may be confused over what to call their school.
The college’s board of regents voted to change the name to Northern New Mexico University in January. Now state legislators are arguing the board did not have the authority to change the name without approval from the General Assembly first, according to the Sante Fe New Mexican.
The regents, who say the new name better reflected the schools offerings, did request a bill from the legislature, but only after they approved the name change first. However, that bill died when its sponsor did not present the bill.
