Office of Information Security offers virus, spyware protection for UGA students, faculty, staff

The Office of Information Security has upgraded the service that provides free anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall protection for computers of UGA students, faculty and staff.

Available at http://virus.uga.edu, Microsoft Security Essentials can be downloaded for use on personally owned computers. The security software provides real-time protection that guards against viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

The site also includes downloads for Macintosh and Linux-based computers.

The office continues to offer F-Secure for use on UGA-owned Windows computers. F-Secure is three tools in one. It provides active anti-virus scanning of new files and e-mail; it can run a full system scan on a schedule as well. It includes a robust, customizable firewall that will warn you in case another computer attempts to access your system. Finally, it includes an anti-spyware scanner to remove any advertisements, pop-ups or other unwanted programs that often get installed with free software found online. In addition to these services, it keeps itself updated.

The download service allows individuals to choose a custom build specifically for their department or unit. If a department is not listed in the departmental build list, contact the IT professional in the department and have him or her request a departmental build. If a department does not have an IT professional, contact the EITS Help Desk at (706) 542-3106, helpdesk@uga.edu.
