UGA musicologist Stephen Valdez is quoted in a Fort Wayne Journal Gazette news story about corruption in the music industry. “You know, this whole payola thing just makes me barf,” he says. “I am trying to teach a class about rock music and the evolution of rock styles and, because of the recording industry, I have a difficult time providing the actual music for my students without them having to pay exorbitant copyright fees, and here are all these radio and video jockeys receiving bribes to play certain recordings.”
