Athens, Ga. – Plantapalooza, a one-day sale of plants, will take place April 11 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at three locations on the University of Georgia campus: the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, the Trial Gardens and the UGA Horticulture Club.
Each sale offers an assortment of garden plants that thrive in the Southeast. Horticulturists, volunteers and Master Gardeners can help select vegetation and answer gardening questions.
The Trial Gardens at UGA, 220 W. Green St., grows and tests the newest annuals and perennials from plant breeders throughout the world. John Ruter, the Allan Armitage Professor of Horticulture and director of the Trial Gardens, will be available to sign his latest book, “Landscaping with Conifers and Ginkgo for the Southeast.” Profits from the plant sale help fund research and continued support for the garden. The Trials Gardens are part of the horticulture department in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
The State Botanical Garden of Georgia, 2450 S. Milledge Ave., is the headquarters of the Georgia Plant Conservation Alliance and the Georgia Gold Medal Plant Program. Gold Medal plants will be among the selection of trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, herbs, vegetables and more. Experts in native plants will be available to talk with buyers. The garden is a unit of the Office of Public Service and Outreach.
The UGA Horticulture Club will be selling garden and landscape plants near the intersection of Riverbend and College Station roads. Horticulture faculty and students will be available to help with plant selection. Profits help fund horticulture club scholarships and educational activities at UGA.
Many specialty nurseries in the Athens area offer discounts to Plantapalooza attendees who show special cards stamped during the UGA event.
