Poll: Americans value college but are concerned about affordability

Most Americans think higher education is valuable for getting a good job and making more money, but there also are concerns about the cost and quality of education, according to a new survey from the Lumina Foundation and Gallup.

Nearly 75 percent of Americans said that having a certificate or degree beyond high school is “very important.” The study also linked higher education to increased feelings of job security and better pay among respondents.

However, quality and cost were questioned by respondents with only 46 percent of Americans responding that the quality of education in the U.S. was better than in other countries. One in four Americans said higher education is affordable for everyone who needs it.
