According to the American Council on Education’s Office of Women in Higher Education, Princeton University has become the first institution to adopt a policy that grants all faculty members extra time to pursue tenure after the birth or adoption of a child. Under this policy, assistant professors will receive a one-year extension for every child born or adopted without a limit on the number of extensions granted.
“What we’re trying to do is make Princeton as family friendly a place as possible,” says, David Dobkin, dean of the faculty. “One thing we’ve been working on here is helping people have a work-life balance.” Since the implementation of the program this past May, a number of extensions have been granted.
