Private college exchanges free tuition for town’s school building

Finlandia University, a private school in Michigan’s upper peninsula, has struck a deal with the town of Hancock, Mich., in which the university receives a building no longer needed by the public school system and all qualifying graduates of Hancock High School for the next 12 years will receive free tuition to the university, the Associated Press reported.

Hancock, a former mining town with a population of 4,900, graduated 55 students last spring. Twenty-five of those accepted Finlandia’s offer of free tuition this semester. Tuition for Finlandia typically runs about $18,000 a year, according to AP.
