Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Mike Luckovich to present Jack Davis Distinguished Visiting Artist Lecture on UGA campus Feb. 23

Athens, Ga. – Mike Luckovich, the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, will deliver the eighth annual Jack Davis Visiting Artist Lecture on the University of Georgia campus Feb. 23. The event will be in room 101 of the Student Learning Center at 5:30 p.m. and is open free to the public.

While he is the eighth lecturer in the Davis Lecture Series sponsored by the Lamar Dodd School of Art, Luckovich is the third winner of the Jack Davis Award. This award was initiated three years ago to raise the profile of the Davis Lecture Series and is being presented retroactively to all the Davis Visiting Artists.

Luckovich received the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1995 and 2006, but the 46-year-old has in fact won almost every award a cartoonist can. He won the Overseas Press Club’s award for the “Best Cartoons on Foreign Affairs for 1989,” and in 1991, he was awarded the National Headliners award for editorial cartoonists. Last year he also won the National Cartoonist Society’s highest award, the Reuben, for cartoonist of the year.

After his graduation from the University of Washington, Luckovich freelanced as a cartoonist while working as a door-to-door salesman before moving to Atlanta. His cartoons, syndicated by Creators Syndicate, appear in more than 350 daily publications, including The Washington Post, the Detroit News, the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune. His work is reprinted regularly in Time, Newsweek and The New York Times.

Jack Davis is one of the best-known and most important American illustrators of the past 50 years. His work spans every genre in the illustration field from MAD Magazine to Playboy and Time.

Davis is noted for his style of wild, free-flowing brushwork, wacky characters and incredible crowd scenes. He has also received the Reuben award and was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame at the Museum of American Illustration in New York. Davis attended UGA in the early 1950s.

The intent of the Jack Davis Distinguished Visiting Artist program is to honor Davis and his contributions to popular culture, and to bring outstanding professional illustrators who share in this tradition to the UGA campus for a public lecture and creative exchanges with students and faculty.
