Tom Reichert, professor of advertising in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, has been named the new head of the college’s department of advertising and public relations.
The Virginia native joined the Grady College faculty in 2004 as an associate professor. He served as assistant department head from 2006-2010.
Reichert received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, and both his master’s and Ph.D. degrees in communications from the University of Arizona.
Reichert is an internationally recognized scholar on the content and effects of sex in advertising and the media. He also created and maintains www.sexinadvertising.com, the online source for sex in advertising research, history and commentary. His additional research interests include media and politics, and social marketing.
He is author of The Erotic History of Advertising, co-author of Kleppner’s Advertising Procedure (18th edition), and co-editor and contributor to Sex in Advertising: Perspectives on the Erotic Appeal and Sex in Consumer Culture: The Erotic Content of Media and Marketing.
Reichert also served as editor of Issues in American Advertising: Media, Society and a Changing World (2nd edition), and Investigating the Use of Sex in Media Promotion and Advertising.
Reichert is a member of the editorial review boards of the Journal of Advertising, the Journal of Promotion Management, Sexuality & Culture and Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly.
His teaching specialties include an array of advertising courses, as well as media sales and political campaign strategy.
Before joining the faculty at UGA, he taught at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, and the University of North Texas, Denton.
