Athens, Ga. – Three distinguished alumni of the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication will be recognized on May 10 during the college’s annual Alumni Awards Brunch. The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Georgian Hotel in Athens.
Edward Ingles, Freeport, N.Y., will receive the John Holliman Jr. Lifetime Achievement Award. The Henry W. Grady Mid-Career Alumni Award will be presented to Lisa Ryan Howard, Brooklyn, N.Y. Alex Wallace, Atlanta, will receive the John E. Drewry Young Alumni Award.
“Once again, the selection committee of our Grady College Alumni Board has made a stellar set of recommendations for our three outstanding achievement awards,” said E. Culpepper Clark, dean of the Grady College. “Each recipient exhibits a commitment to excellence in a purposeful life, and thereby commands the attention of our students as role models.”
Ingles (ABJ ’58) is a pioneering radio broadcaster. The Bronx native spent 53 years in broadcasting, with 24 of them as sports director for WCBS Radio, where he also served as morning drive sports anchor. He’s reported on 35 Masters Golf Tournaments, 11 Olympic games, Super Bowls, boxing bouts, New York Jets football, and St. John’s University and Iona College basketball. He was among the first to venture in the dressing room for post-game comments for radio reports.
Ingles serves as a professional-in-residence at New York’s Hofstra University, a position he has held since 1996 when he joined WRHU-88.7. The radio legend also served as an adjunct professor at St. John’s University where he taught broadcast and sports journalism. Ingles has mentored hundreds of aspiring news and sportscasters, some of whom are now nationally known in their professions and can be found working at CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox News, ESPN, NBA TV, MSG, Bloomberg, MLB Radio and NHL Productions.
Howard (ABJ ’92) is the recipient of the Henry W. Grady Mid-Career Alumni Award. Most recently, she was publisher of Billboard, one of the music industry’s leading trade magazines. The former advertising major also enjoyed a distinguished career with Condé Nast, one of the largest monthly magazine publishers and digital publishers of branded content websites.
Howard served as senior vice president, chief revenue officer of Fairchild Fashion Group, the business media division of Condé Nast; vice president, interactive, for Condé Nast Media Group, the company’s corporate sales and marketing division; and vice president, publisher of Condé Nast’s Style.com and Men.Style.com sites. With 20 years of strategic media, marketing and sales experience, Howard also has worked in account planning, and sales and marketing management roles at companies ranging from an Internet start-up to Time Inc. and Disney/ABC/Cap Cities.
Wallace (ABJ ’04), a former broadcast news major, is an on-camera meteorologist for The Weather Channel in Atlanta. A member of the National Weather Association, he handles double duties at the station, forecasting on the network Friday through Tuesday mornings, as well as for broadband/mobile products on weather.com. While earning a master’s degree in geosciences with an emphasis in broadcast meteorology at Mississippi State University, he forecast weather for the local Starkville area and earned a “Top 5% Forecaster Award” in the National Collegiate Weather Forecasting Contest. He also interned with The Weather Channel while in graduate school and was hired full-time in 2006.
The Grady College Alumni Awards are given to those who demonstrate distinguished achievement in journalism and mass communication. The Holliman Lifetime Achievement Award, named for Grady alumnus and former CNN reporter the late John Holliman, honors a graduate for sustained contributions to the profession throughout a career. The Henry W. Grady Award honors a mid-career graduate who has been successful and influential in their field. The John E. Drewry Award honors a graduate of the last decade who has experienced exciting and productive career developments.
