The Russell Library will hold an opening program lecture and screening in conjunction with its new exhibit, The Highlander Center: Weaving the Threads of Justice, on Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. The exhibit is on display until Nov. 30 at the library, which is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
Open free to the public, the event will kick off with a lecture by Helen Lewis, one of the most widely regarded community activists in Appalachia and a longtime Highlander staff member. Lewis will provide an overview of the center’s history and an introduction to the film, You Got to Move, a documentary that highlights the civil rights education projects undertaken at Highlander in the 1950s and 1960s. Lewis also will sign copies of her book, From Convent to Community in Appalachia, which will be available for purchase. A light reception will follow the program. Following the lecture, Jan Levinson and Jill Severn, exhibit curators, will be on hand for tours of the exhibit.
The Russell Library is located on the west side of the main library. Directions and parking information are available online (www.libs.uga.edu/directions.html) or by calling (706) 542-5788.
