S.C. lawmakers propose merger of two Charleston colleges

In a move reminescent of recent higher-education consolidation efforts in Georgia, two South Carolina lawmakers have proposed a bill to merge the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina.

The result, the state legislators say, would become Charleston University, joining Clemson University and the University of South Carolina in Columbia as the state’s third research institute, according to South Carolina news website The State.

If the bill is approved, the campuses would merge by 2016.
