Shanta Dhar, an assistant professor of chemistry in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, received the Targeting Mitochondria 2012 Award for Scientific Contribution from the Third World Congress on Targeting Mitochondria and the International Society of Antioxidant in Nutrition and Health, the highest honor given by the conference. Dhar’s research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, uses nanoparticles to deliver drugs to mitochondria to treat cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and obesity in studies conducted with cultured cells.
