Soaring R&D

With a focus on strategic faculty hires and investments in research facilities, UGA’s R&D expenditures surpassed $545M in Fiscal Year 2022. Our research enterprises are growing by leaps and bounds because we are focused on forward-thinking discoveries, and we’re just getting started.

56% Growth in R&D Expenditures over the past 9 years

The number of sponsored awards secured by UGA scholars has more than doubled in nine years. That’s because we’ve recruited established researchers, such as Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholars Anumantha Kanthasamy and Robin Buell.

Dr. Kanthasamy, who holds the John H. “Johnny” Isakson Chair, has made growing strides in the fight against Parkinson’s while securing significant funding for facilities and research.

Dr. Buell, an expert in plant genomics, recently secured a five-year, $15.8 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy to research sustainable energy sources.

Expanding Interdisciplinary Research

Interdisciplinary hiring initiatives have bolstered our strengths in vital fields like cybersecurity, environmental science, brain and behavioral health, and precision agriculture.

The Interdisciplinary Faculty Hiring Initiative in Data Science and AI brings accomplished researchers to UGA and expands our strengths and opportunities as a comprehensive research institution.

Through 11 hiring initiatives over the past 10 years, we have recruited more than 150 scholars and nine new Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholars in strategically important fields.
