Sonia Hernandez, an assistant professor in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, received more than $60,000 from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the American Bird Conservancy to use kitty cams to study the effects of island cats on wildlife mortality. Kitty cams are special cameras placed on cats that provide a cat’s-eye view of their behavior. Hernandez and her collaborators will follow the activities of feral cats on a barrier island off the Georgia coast to see how feral cats affect their environment and what steps may be taken to reduce the damage they cause.
