Southern University in New Orleans will reopen next semester to students. But due to the damage the campus suffered from Hurricane Katrina, classes will take place in temporary buildings provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Southern University officials have located 2,000 of the institution’s 3,600 enrolled students. However, they will not know until after registration in early January how many students will return. With a total of $350 million in hurricane-related damages, Southern University suffered the most destruction when compared to other institutions in the Gulf Coast region.
