Stanford University recently passed a policy granting female graduate students six weeks of maternity leave.
The plan gives eligible students up to two consecutive quarters to postpone examinations, course assignments and other course work and an additional quarter to complete major departmental requirements. Female students in fellowships or assistantships can also be excused from their duties while maintaining full-time student status. They will continue to receive any tuition support, salaries and stipends during the six-week period. University officials say the policy aims to retain top female talent across campus.
