State Botanical Garden to host Cultures and Cuisines fundraiser

Event to feature food from around the world

Athens, Ga. – The State Botanical Garden of Georgia will feature six local restaurants at the Around the World Cultures and Cuisines fundraiser Aug. 23 from 7-9 p.m. The event is being held to celebrate the Spanish-American, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean sections of the International Garden.

Featured restaurants will include Square One, The Last Resort, The Grit, The National, Speakeasy, Heirloom Cafe and Fresh Market, and Ted’s Most Best. Each restaurant will offer tastings of dishes complemented by various beverages. BotJam, a band comprised of past and present garden employees and a recipient of a Crowd Favorite Award at the 2011 AthensBusinessRocks contest, will provide the musical entertainment.

“This event will be completely casual,” said Jeannette Coplin, director of horticulture and grounds at the State Botanical Garden. “We want people to enjoy the collections, food, music and each other while showing their support of our gardens.”

Proceeds will be used to expand and maintain the garden’s plant collections, which are not only educational but inspire visitors to try new plants and plant combinations that are tested in Georgia’s climate as part of home landscapes.

The event will be held in the Gardenside Room on the lower level of the Visitor Center and Conservatory and in the International Garden. Tickets are $30 each and can be purchased at the door or in advance by calling 706/542-1244.
