State Botanical Garden to ring in holidays with open house

Athens, Ga. – The State Botanical Garden of Georgia will hold its annual holiday open house on Dec. 4 from 2-5 p.m. inside the tropical conservatory, which will be decorated for the holidays in celebration of the hummingbirds that winter in Georgia.

“Many species of hummingbirds have been seen in Georgia during the fall and winter months,” said Connie Cottingham, public relations and special events coordinator for the Garden. “Department of Natural Resources staff is asking residents to keep a hummingbird feeder up during the winter months and report sightings to them.”

The open house, which is free to the public, will feature musical entertainment by the Georgia Children’s Chorus, the Solstice Sisters and the Classic City Band. Photographer Mark Parsons will be on hand to take photos as Santa and Mrs. Claus listen to children’s wishes. Young children can also enjoy puppet shows, which will be held at 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. in the children’s classroom; and adults can browse the gift shop for holiday ornaments and presents. Holiday drinks and treats will be available for sale at the Garden’s coffee shop.
