Students to weigh pros and cons of gun control in upcoming debate

Athens, Ga. – The University Union Student Programming Board at the University of Georgia will present a gun control debate on March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tate Student Center Grand Hall.

The debate will feature arguments from Richard Feldman of the Independent Firearm Owners Association and Kathryn Grant of the non-profit organization Gun Free Kids. Feldman has spent two decades as an advocate for the rights of gun owners, while Grant’s organization says it seeks to provide a “safer America” for children by implementing stricter gun control laws.

“In the wake of the recent mass shootings at a Colorado movie theater and a Connecticut elementary school, gun control has reemerged as a hot-button issue,” said Elizabeth Hansen, senior coordinator for student activities and organizations and University Union adviser. “With the national dialogue surging, we want to give students an opportunity to hear a reasoned discussion on both sides of the issue to help them formulate their own opinions.”

Tickets are free for students with valid UGACards who pay activity fees on the Athens campus and $5 for non-students. Tickets are available at the Tate Student Center Cashier Window, open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
