For the first time in over 30 years, the number of biology and biomedical sciences postdocs has declined, according to a new paper in The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal.
Researchers found that doctoral and postdoc programs have continued to have steady growth until now, and the postdoctoral population decreased 5.5 percent.
“For some newly minted Ph.D. students, eschewing a postdoc may reflect a rational response to a tight academic labor market with low compensation and uncertain prospects forsuccess,” said lead author Howard Garrison.
