A survey released in August by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology paints a grim picture of a scientific community struggling with federal cuts to research, including sequestration in March.
According to the survey of U.S. scientists and engineers, 64 percent reported having difficulty receiving grant funding.
Private investment has not made up the difference so far, respondents said. Only 2 percent report finding private money to make up for the loss of federal grants.
In addition, more than 75 percent said the state of federal investment in scientific research has damaged the American research enterprise.
