Too formulaic

John M. Drake, an associate professor in the Odum School of Ecology, was quoted in a Chronicle of Higher Education story about a new formula that aims to predict a scientist’s future success by measuring his or her publishing history.

Drake was skeptical of the formula because it could lead to scientists sticking to popular and established topics, which are more likely to get published, rather than exploring new or obscure areas. That, he said in the story, “would seem to be the opposite of creativity.”
