A 92-year old resident of Somerville, Mass., split her $4 million estate between Tufts and Boston universities in her will. Doris W. York had no relation to either institution, graduating from Portia Law School and working for the United States Trust Co. in Boston. York’s act was partially defiant. A lawyer and bank executive, she worked her way through school after her father refused to give her money, claiming that women had no place in higher education. She stipulated that the money be used toward scholarships to women from Somerville, Mass.
