Athens, Ga. – Composers, listen up.
The Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia in the University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music is sponsoring the Arch Composition Award, with the grand prize winner taking home $5,000.
This is a competition for new wind band compositions that have never been performed or published, and it’s open to all who meet the rules, regulations and requirements.
In addition to the cash prize, the grand prize winner will have her or his winning piece premiered by the UGA Wind Ensemble under the direction of John P. Lynch at the UGA Bands’ 60th anniversary of the High School Festival for Bands in January 2010, an event widely known as “JamFest.”
Awards for second place and third place will receive $1,000 and $500 respectively, as well as a premiere performance of the winning piece at the same concert.
Applicants must submit a typed, completed application, six copies of the full score, a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that materials may be returned to the composer, MIDI or live recording of the composition on a CD and a non-refundable application fee of $25. Submissions must be postmarked no later than Aug. 1, 2009.

UGA’s Epsilon Lambda Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia was founded on Jan. 14, 1950. Phi Mu Alpha is a collegiate social fraternity for men with an interest in music. The fraternity currently has 221 active collegiate chapters in the United States, and more than 150,000 men have been initiated into Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia since its founding in 1898.
The Hugh Hodgson School of Music is part of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at UGA.
