Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia College of Education recognized several outstanding faculty members, an academic adviser and an Honors student at its annual Spring Celebration Luncheon recently held at the UGA Hotel and Conference Center at the Georgia Center.
Aderhold Distinguished Professor
Pamela Paisley, a professor in the department of counseling and human development services, received the college’s highest honor when she was named the Aderhold Distinguished Professor for exemplary contributions in teaching, research and service. The Aderhold Distinguished Professor holds the title for one academic year, and receives discretionary funds for one year, a one-time cash award or a combination of the two. Only professors with five years or more on the UGA faculty are eligible.
Paisley was praised for her efforts to transform the practice of school counseling with her sustained commitment to social justice and advocacy. Her work on the Transforming School Counseling Project formed the foundation on which the American School Counselor Association National Model is based. Paisley is a licensed professional counselor in the state of Georgia and a nationally certified counselor.

Ira Aaron Award for Teaching Excellence
Cory Buxton, an associate professor in the department of elementary and social studies education, received the Ira E. Aaron Award for Teaching Excellence and Collegiality. Only full-time tenured faculty members are eligible for this award. The awardee receives an instructional grant.
Carl Glickman Faculty Fellow
Martha Allexsaht-Snider, an associate professor in the department of elementary and social studies education, received the Carl Glickman Faculty Fellow Award, which recognizes distinguished accomplishments and potential for future contributions of faculty in fulfilling the mission of the university through teaching, research and service. Awardees receive a cash award and a grant for professional development.
Russell H. Yeany, Jr., Research Award
Laura Bierema, a professor in the department of lifelong education, administration and policy, received the Russell H. Yeany Jr., Research Award, which recognizes a tenure-track faculty member’s outstanding cumulative research. It includes a cash award and a grant for professional development.
Faculty Diversity Award
Dorothy White, an associate professor in the department of mathematics and science education, received the Faculty Diversity Award. The award recognizes faculty members whose research, teaching and/or service promotes a more diverse local, university and/or global community. It includes a cash award.
Donald O. Schneider Award for Mentoring
Janna Dresden, director of the Office of School Engagement, received the Donald O. Schneider Award for Mentoring. The award recognizes excellence in mentoring UGA students. Awardees receive an allowance for professional travel or development.
D. Keith Osborn Award for Teaching Excellence
John Mativo, an assistant professor in the department of workforce education, leadership and social foundations, and Corey Johnson, an associate professor in the department of counseling and human development services, received the Faculty Senate D. Keith Osborn Award for Teaching Excellence. Awardees receive an instructional grant.
William A. Owens Creative Research Award
Ronald Butchart, 2011 Aderhold Distinguished Professor, received UGA’s William A. Owens Creative Research Award. The award is given to recognize an outstanding body of nationally and internationally recognized scholarly or creative activities in the social and behavioral sciences.
Sarah Moss Fellowship
Ruth Harman, of the department of language and literacy development, received the fellowship that is offered through UGA’s Office of the Vice President for Instruction. This fellowship provides funds for travel and related expenses for faculty pursuing advanced study in institutions of higher learning abroad and in the U.S.
2011-12 Service-Learning Fellowship
Jennifer James, an assistant professor in the department of elementary and social studies education, received UGA’s 2011-12 Service Learning Fellowship. The fellows program provides an opportunity for faculty members from a range of disciplines to integrate academic service learning into their professional practice. Fellows meet regularly throughout the academic year and receive an award of up to $2,500 to develop a proposed service learning project.
Study in a Second Discipline Fellowship
Stephanie Jones, an associate professor in the department of elementary and social studies education, received UGA’s Study in a Second Discipline Fellowship. The Study in a Second Discipline program, sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, promotes interdisciplinary scholarship by providing tenured faculty an opportunity to extend or enlarge the range of their knowledge by study of disciplines other than those in their present field(s) of specialization.
Scholarship of Engagement Award
Lorilee Sandmann, a professor in the department of lifelong education, administration and policy, received UGA’s Scholarship of Engagement Award. Established in 2008, the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach’s annual award recognizes a permanent, full-time tenured faculty member for sustained contributions to advancing public service, outreach and community engagement over his/her career at UGA.
Outstanding Teaching Award
Anneliese Singh, an associate professor in the department of counseling and human development services, received the Outstanding Teaching Award at the university’s Honors Day.
College of Education Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Adviser
Tony Wells, an academic adviser in the Office of Student Services, was named the college’s Outstanding Undergraduate Academic Adviser. The recipient receives a cash award.
College of Education Outstanding Honors Student
Christopher Sudduth, of the department of kinesiology, received the Outstanding Honors Student in the College of Education Award. The award includes a membership to a professional organization or a journal subscription. Sudduth was honored at the recent Honors Program Graduation Banquet.
