The University of Georgia welcomed new faculty members with an orientation that included a panel discussion on strategies for success, an overview of university traditions and lingo, and words of encouragement from academic leaders.

“We’re excited to have all of you now a part of the University of Georgia family, and we look forward to the great contributions that you will make,” said UGA President Jere W. Morehead, who kicked off New Faculty Orientation with an overview of academic initiatives.

New Faculty Orientation is one of many ways the university supports the success of incoming faculty. The orientation kicks off Keys to UGA: New Faculty Academy, a series of workshops geared toward incoming faculty but open to all faculty and staff. Future sessions focus on the Innovation District initiative; launching research, scholarship and creative activities at UGA; public service and outreach; and promotion and tenure procedures, among many other topics.

“This is our second year of the Keys series, and we look forward to continuing to provide opportunities throughout the academic year for faculty new to UGA to learn about campus resources, delve into topics critical to their success and connect with colleagues across campus,” said Elizabeth Weeks, associate provost for faculty affairs.

S. Jack Hu, the university’s senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, noted that 254 faculty of all ranks have joined UGA since spring semester.

“The infusion of new faculty brings new ideas to the institution,” Hu said to the New Faculty Orientation audience. “You will develop new courses and possibly new degree programs. You will mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research. Through your own research and scholarship, you will advance the state of the art in your field. Through the excellence of your teaching, research and service, you will elevate the University of Georgia.”
