Athens, Ga. – Fourteen University of Georgia students have been selected to participate in the UGA Honors Internship Program and will spend their summer working as interns in a variety of programs in Washington, D.C., New York and Savannah.
The Honors Program students, who underwent a rigorous application process, are working 40-hour weeks in professional settings related to their academic interests and career goals. The internship sites include congressional and law offices as well as media and trade organizations.
“This summer’s Honors Program interns are a truly exceptional group, and we look forward to hearing about their achievements,” said Maria de Rocher, coordinator of Honors Programming. “We are also very appreciative of the countless hours alumni in these cities dedicate to our students-organizing gatherings, serving as mentors, and introducing our students to the array of professional opportunities awaiting them after graduation.”
Eleven students will intern in Washington, D.C. through the Honors in Washington Program. Two students will intern in New York City, while one will intern in Savannah.
The 2013 Honors Internship Program participants are:
Washington, D.C.
• Alexander Ballasiotes, an economics, finance, and international business major from Charlotte, N.C., will intern in the Office of Rep. Hank Johnson;
• Jared Dunn, a public relations major from Johns Creek, will intern in the Office of Sen. Johnny Isakson;
• Megan Ernst, a journalism and political science major from Atlanta who also is pursuing a master of public administration degree, will intern at Freedman Consulting;
• Jackson Garner, an economics and international affairs major from Savannah who also is pursuing a master of public administration degree, will intern in the Office of Rep. Jack Kingston;
• Elizabeth Harrell, a finance and political science major from St. Simons, will intern in the Office of Sen. Saxby Chambliss and the Office of Rep. David Scott;
• Whitney Jinks, a public relations and Spanish major from Jonesboro, will intern at National Geographic;
• Cody Knapp, an anthropology and international affairs major from Thomasville, will intern in the Washington, D.C. office of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo;
• Andrew Smith, a finance major from Alpharetta, will intern at the international law firm McKenna, Long and Aldridge LLP;
• Carmina Taylor, a journalism and sociology major from Athens, will intern at Voice of America TV to Africa;
• Grant Thomas, an international affairs and political science major from Alpharetta, will intern in Office of Rep. Tom Graves; and
• Taryn Winston, a journalism and political science major from Lawrenceville, will intern in the Office of Rep. John Barrow.
New York
• Sarah Lane, a genetics major from St. Simons who also is pursuing a master’s in public health degree, will intern at the Greater New York Hospital Association; and
• Anna Roberto, a management and biology major from Atlanta, will intern at Greater New York Hospital Association.
Savannah
• Allison Bailey, an English and French major from Decatur, will intern at the U.S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia.
