UGA to hold Sustainapalooza March 19

Media Advisory: UGA to hold Sustainapalooza March 19; Georgia Power offset program provides energy

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia GoGreen Alliance, in conjunction with the UGA Physical Plant Division, will sponsor Sustainapalooza Thursday, March 19, at Legion Field. The event will include a free concert by seven musical acts from 4-11 p.m. Environmental organizations will provide information and demonstrations focusing on conservation, land preservation, pollution prevention, renewable energy and other sustainability issues from 2-7:30 p.m.

Energy for the event will be offset through a partnership with the Georgia Power Green Energy program. The Green Energy program generates energy by capturing methane from landfill gas, which is produced by decaying organic matter in landfills. The captured methane is used to power an electric generator. This method of producing renewable energy is considered one of the most mature and successful in the field of green power.

Sponsors for Sustainapalooza include UGA Students for Environmental Awareness, the UGA Ecology Club, the UGA Herpetology Club, the Georgia Environmental Conference, Better World Books, Glenn Company, Tennent Company, Athens Janitor Supply, Promotional Marketing Services, The Coca Cola Company, Grainger, UGA Students in Free Enterprise, the UGA Physical Plant Division and the UGA GoGreen Alliance.

Additional information about Sustainapalooza and the Green Energy offset program is available by contacting Andrew Lentini, UGA’s recycling coordinator, 706/542-3152, alentini@uga.edu.
