University of Georgia Griffin Campus to break ground on new Student Learning Center

Griffin, Ga. – The University of Georgia will hold a public groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 30 for the new Student Learning Center to be constructed on the university’s Griffin Campus.

The Student Learning Center is being built with funds raised through a $10 million special purpose local option sales tax overwhelmingly approved by Spalding County voters in November 2005.

UGA President Michael F. Adams will preside at the groundbreaking event, scheduled for 10 a.m. on the Griffin Campus. Cheryl Matlock and Dave Lamb, who served as co-chairs of the SPLOST committee that approved the funding for the Student Learning Center, are scheduled to speak, along with the local legislative delegation: State Senator Ronnie Chance and state representatives John P. Yates and David Knight.

Following their remarks, the platform party will participate in the groundbreaking, joined by UGA administrators, including Arnett C. Mace Jr., senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, and Tim Burgess, senior vice president for finance and administration. Representatives from the several schools and colleges that now offer degree programs on the Griffin Campus also will be on hand.

Optional tours of the current academic facilities at the Griffin Campus will be offered at 9 a.m. and following the groundbreaking ceremony. A reception will be held immediately afterwards at the Woodroof Agricultural Pavilion on campus.

President Adams also will be speaking to the Griffin Rotary club that day.

UGA has offered bachelor’s degree-completion programs since 2005 at the Griffin Campus, which was founded in 1888 as the Georgia Experiment Station. In fall 2007, seven undergraduate majors are being offered, as well as two graduate degree programs.
