Volunteer fair guides students to community involvement

Athens, Ga. – The seventh annual Athens Volunteer Fair is scheduled at the University of Georgia Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. and 5 – 7 p.m. in the Tate Student Center Grand Hall. The event exposes students to volunteer opportunities with campus-based service groups as well as Athens-area nonprofit, social service and government agencies.

The fair is co-sponsored by UGA’s Center for Leadership and Service, HandsOn Northeast Georgia and the Athens Banner-Herald Blueprint. Admission also is open to members of the local community.

Rick Gray, senior coordinator for the Center for Leadership and Service, said students gain more from volunteering than just the sense of satisfaction that comes with helping others.

“Getting students involved in community service builds their social awareness and ultimately improves their life skills and self-image,” he said. “People who begin volunteer work in high school or college carry the spirit of service for their entire lives.”

The Center for Leadership and Service is a unit within UGA’s Division of Student Affairs. For more information, call 706/583-0830 or see www.uga.edu/cls.
